Missing swimmer’s body found off Herring Point
The body of a missing swimmer was found July 16 in the water off Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes.
Emergency responders with the Lewes Fire Department, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and Sussex County medics responded in two boats about 1:30 p.m. to the ocean off Herring Point after a kayaker spotted the body, said Robert Stephens, spokesman for the Lewes Fire Department.
Lt. Mark Sweet of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department said Gregory Karitu, 27, of Kenya was recovered from the water. No foul play is suspected in Karitu’s death, he said.
Karitu had gone missing July 12 after swimming in the ocean off Olive Avenue. The Rehoboth Beach Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard, DNREC, Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and Delaware State Police Aviation searched for Karitu, but suspended the search July 13.
