Cape’s Thomas Ott, the 2012 Delaware state champion, won the 220-pound title at this weekend's Battle at the Beach wrestling tournament at Indian River High School. Ott was 5-0 in his bracket with three pins, a major decision and a 2-0 win in the finals over Hunter Hatlee of Wilson High School out of New Jersey.
Cape placed ninth in the 27-team tournament. Smyrna was second and Caesar Rodney was seventh.
Austin Smith at 145 placed second for Cape, losing to Dillan Burghoff of Buena Regional in the final.
Andre Flower, 182, placed fourth for Cape while Aaron Mattioni took fifth place.
Henlopen Conference wrestlers to win weight class titles included Brent Fleetwood of Smyrna 113, Tyler Carney of Smyrna 126, and Jarren Wilson of Smyrna 160.
“I knew it was a tough tournament going in, and I’m not sure our kids believed me,” coach Chris Mattioni said. "I thought we wrestled well up and down the lineup.”
