Prediction Run 5K caps Seashore Striders’ summer races

September 2, 2016

Saturday morning, Sept. 3 will mark the last race of the summer for the Seashore Striders, as the 2016 Last Blast Prediction 5K will kick off at 7:30 a.m. from Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach. The top 20 closest to their predicted time will be the award winners as well as the overall male and female champions.

There are interesting rules with this event. There are no mile markers, there are no splits, there's a water stop between the start and the finish, and the clock is turned around at the finish line. Runners are not allowed to wear watches or GPSs or carry their iPhones, which makes the race more of a challenge.

To register for this event, go to www.seashorestriders.com.

Following the Prediction Run award ceremony, we will present this Summer Championship Series of awards to all the qualifiers.

Lake Forest Invitational

The Lake Forest Invitational will kick off the high school cross country season Saturday, Sept. 10, at Killens Pond State Park in Felton. The meet was started long ago by the late Jim Blades and will again be hosted by Lake Forest High School, led by head coach Eric Payne, a longtime runner and racer in the Kent County area. The meet this year will be managed by Ray Parker of Tri-Sports Events as the veteran meet director and former coach of the Lake Forest program. The volunteers and paid staff have done a quality job year in and year out at the meet.

There will be varsity, JV and third-team races all over the place in addition to a middle school open event in the middle of the day, attracting the youth of the future. The meet will be the opener for the Seashore Striders cross country program, beginning its 26th year in Lewes.  Good luck to all runners and meet personnel as the season kicks off at the Lake Forest Invite.

Custom Cannonballs

"The Most Beautiful Race Course in Delaware" is the subtitle of the 13th annual Cannonball 5K Run to be held Sunday, Sept. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Lewes Historical Society is proud to present the 5K event and Trenny Elliott Memorial 1-Mile Walk. The race benefits the society's preservation and educational programming. The race is designed to be a tour of historic Lewes, beginning and ending at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes. The course includes breathtaking scenery along Pilottown Road, and views of the Great Marsh, Shipcarpenter Square, Second Street and the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. A description of the historic sites along the race route is included on the LHS website. The award ceremony and post race party will take place at the LHS Complex. The favorite Wooden Cannonball trophies are fashioned for the first-place winners in each of the 14 age groups as well as special awards for overall and masters champion. Visit the society’s nationally acclaimed grounds, enjoy the streets of one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations, and support the society – with your help, we can pass Lewes’ special qualities down to future generations!  Visit seashorestriders.com to get registered.
