Racial justice alliance awards student scholarships

July 18, 2023

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to 11 students across Sussex County as part of its annual Charlotte King Scholarship program.

Named for SDARJ’s founder, the program recognizes Black and African American students from Sussex County who are continuing their education beyond high school and have demonstrated concern for furthering racial understanding and justice, qualities of citizenship and leadership, and service to their school and community.

The selected students are Thomas Gibbs and Janiah Maltbie, Cape Henlopen High School; Zhanya Holland, Indian River High School; Ketsia Murat and Lunise Etienne, Laurel Senior High School; Aaliyah Tilghman, Milford Senior High School; Bethani Hare, Seaford Senior High School; Daykhi Conquest-Carey, Sussex Central High School; Sania Steward, Sussex Technical High School; and Iyanna Mims and Ian Hayes, Woodbridge High School.

For 2024, the Charlotte King Scholarship program has received a generous donation from Ocean Atlantic Sotheby's International Realty.

SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equity and fair opportunity in our community. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
