With a bright-yellow 45 rpm record adapter painted on the window and a turntable for sale sitting on the inside sill, there’s no doubt Extended Play in Rehoboth is a record-collector’s record store.
Owner Steve Fallon said he wanted that way.
“People that know what this is are going to be the kind of person who is going to want to come to this store,” said Fallon of the painted adapter. “From the street, this is definitely a record store.”
Extended Play opened in July on Rehoboth Avenue, between Dos Locos Stonegrill and Creative Expressions Art Gallery.
Fallon, who also owns Gidget’s Gadgets, said he opened the new store to give him and store manager Jackson Beckner time to focus on the music. It’s hard to be cataloging and pricing records when someone keeps asking about atomic fireballs every few seconds, he said.
Fallon said there are 2,000 records in the store now, with a couple more collections expected soon. He said the space – not much more than 10 feet wide and 40 feet deep – can hold up to 10,000 records.
“This is the perfect size for a record store,” he said. “It’s not overwhelming.”
Beckner said Extended Play will stock any genre of music – rock, jazz, hip hop and classical, adding, he already has a pretty eclectic mix of music.
Fallon said the store has a wide variety because people aren’t predictable in their music selections.
“Sometimes someone will come in, I’ll expect them to buy a certain kind of music, but then they’ll buy something completely different,” said Fallon.
Beckner said there are new and refurbished turntables. He said the turntables are higher quality and described them as being for someone looking to upgrade.
The store also sells buttons, T-shirts, and new music-themed posters that are reproductions of older original art. These are good for when records aren’t selling, Fallon said.
Fallon said the business has also had some success selling their records on Discogs, an online database and marketbase for music on vinyl, cd and cassette. The business’ seller name is extendedplay19971.
Fallon said he and Beckner use the website for pricing their records, and it allows them to sell records while they sleep. He said records have sold all over the country, China, Spain, Portugal and elsewhere.
Fallon said Extended Play will be onsite for Analog-A-Go-Go, Dogfish Head’s annual festival that pays homage to the vinyl era. This year it take place Friday, Nov. 16 to Sunday, Nov. 18.
Extended Play, 204 Rehoboth Ave., is open for business noon to 8 p.m., seven days a week. For more information, call 302-226-8469 or email extendedplayrehoboth@gmail.com.
