Ruth Evelyn Allen, Capital district retiree
Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Allen arrived into this world March 2, 1946, in Harbeson, to Mr. Willie and Mamie Wright and departed this life Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at her home in Dover with her family by her side. She grew up in the small town of Belltown in Lewes, and began her schooling in the Rabbits Ferry Public School System before going on to attend W.C. Jason High School in her teens. "Miss Ruth "or "Ruthie," as her husband affectionately called her, was married to Mr. Willie Allen for 42 years. They returned to Dover in 1983 after spending 23 years traveling around the world during her husband's extensive career in the United States Air Force, fulfilling her dream of returning home to be around family and friends as they began the next chapter in their lives.
She was finally able to begin her own career working for the Capital School District until her retirement in 2008. Miss Ruth was known to many as a clean freak and a shopaholic, for always keeping an immaculate home filled with numerous shopping bags from her excursions to support the local economy.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Mamie Wright; her three brothers, Bob, Buster and George Wright; two sisters, Annett Johnson and Margaret Hall; and her son, Kermit Walker. After fighting a long, courageous battle with lung cancer, she leaves behind to celebrate her life a loving husband, Willie Allen; son, Aldarko "Junior" Allen; and loving daughter-in-law, Alexandra of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Vernon Walker and caring daughter-in-law Gail, and Telmeas "Cepeda" Walker, all of Oakland, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kaia Walker and Telmeas Walker Jr. of California; four great-grandchildren, Donye' Curtis, Kailen Curtis, Londyn-Rae Walker and Bai'lee Walker, also from California. She will be missed by her loving cousins Charlotte Givens, Mary Miller, Helen Miller and Annie-Jane Custis; many others and a host of nieces and nephews. She will also be lovingly remembered by her special friends Mark Bell, Bonnie Harrison, and John and Geneva Richardson; as well as her caring friends Eliah and Willa Gains, Kenney and Ramona Saunders, Glenn Bradley, "Pop" Hudson, Maggie Neal, Cinia Willis, Charles and Mary Bowden, Sandy Caldwell, Mary Hutchinson and many others. Last but not least her favorite grand-dog, Aly.
Miss Ruth will be remembered for the love she freely shared with her family and friends, her great smile, and the joy and zest that she brought to our lives. Her light will shine in our hearts, her love will be in our hands, and her hope will forever be in our spirit. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where family and friends may view one hour earlier. Burial will follow in the Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 910 -D Walker Road, Dover, DE 19901.
