Senior artists shine in Still Blooming exhibit

Artwork by nearly 50 local seniors takes spotlight
August 29, 2025

Still Blooming, a one-day senior art exhibit curated by local artist Phoebe Canakis, debuted Aug. 21 at the Developing Artist Collaboration studios in Rehoboth Beach.

The exhibit, which centered around what brings the participants joy, showcased artwork by nearly 50 Sussex County seniors. Canakis led the project over several weeks at CHEER centers in Georgetown, Milton, Lewes and Ocean View.

“This art project was a good mind activity – made me stop and think,” said 84-year-old Sue Phillips of Ocean View. “It was very enjoyable, and I hope Phoebe offers more classes.”

While each participant started with the same prompt, each piece told a unique story.

Participants’ many sources of joy included family, friends, the beach, helping people, looking at their artwork, music, gardening, nature, animals, food and Pepsi-Cola.

“You never know what you can do until you do it,” said Richie Bauer, 66.
