Striders compete in western Maryland

October 23, 2015

The Seashore Striders Youth Cross Country Team took their show west Oct. 18, taking a coach bus road trip to compete in the Carroll Manor Running Club XC Invitational in Adamstown, Md.

Luke Burton, 10, led the team with the only championship of the day. Last year’s 9-year-old national champion won the Bantam Boys Division over the 3K distance with a time of 11:00. Finishing close behind in second was teammate Brexton Carter in 11:04.

“Luke and Brex just took it out hard from the start and made an early statement on the field of 47 runners,” said coach Derek Shockro. “It was pretty cool to see them both separate from the rest of the field and run out front stride for stride.” Caughnery Freese finished fifth overall in 11:38, while Drew Barthelmess was eighth in 12:05. Raphael Perez was 11th in 12:18, while Josh Kenton was 26th in 14:00.

In the Bantam Girls 9-10 Division, Katie Kuhlman led the way in seventh overall in a time of 12:16, while Devon Hundley was 10th in 12:38. Lainey Shockro was 11th in 12:42, while Morgan Green was 26th in 13:59. Ella Ruppert was 31st in 14:20, while Julie Danello was 34th in 14:31.

In the Sub-Bantam 2K race, it was Allaire Burton who finished 16th in 10:46, while on the boys' side it was first-year brothers Kolbe and Kyle Green who finished seventh and 11th in the race. Kolbe hit the finish in 8:57, while Kyle was timed in 9:11 for the 1.24-mile distance.

In the Midget 11-12-year-old race, Natalie Guida led the way in 14th place in 12:56, while Mia Neubling was 15th in 13:10. Emily Trout, in just her opening year, was 13:15, while Myranda Beebe was 18th in 13:24. On the boys' side, Evan Sydnor finished 14th in 11:52 in just his first year, while Ryan Pickard was 37th in 14:39.

In the 13-14 Youth race, seventh-grader Emma Barthelmess was fifth in the 4K race in a time of 15:51, averaging 6:23 mile pace, while Lindsey Guida was eighth in 17:24. Bridget Loftus ran 19:37, while Elle Scota was timed in 20:00. Myranda Perez ran 20:58. On the boys' side, Blake Hundley was third in 14:11.

“The kids competed well against some good competition today and definitely opened some eyes and let the Maryland state know that youth cross country is alive east of the Chesepeake,” said Shockro.

Paradise 5K

One of the nicest courses along the water and a great after party with live entertainment greeted 160-plus runners Oct. 18 in Long Neck for the inaugural Paradise 5K Run & Walk. The course winded through Pot Nets along two miles of water, before taking in several cart paths that led the field back to Paradise Island. A full breakfast was served to the participants and Mike Hines & the Look took to the stage at 10 a.m. and the dancing commenced.

Martin Rodriguez, 44, ran 17:45 for the male title, while Tricia Gilson, 46, captured the female title, running 22:17. Watch the numbers fly for this event in years to come.
