The Sussex Academy baseball team celebrated Senior Day May 15, but fell to 5-10 with a 7-3 loss to Smyrna at Sports at the Beach in Georgetown.
Seahawks starting pitcher Matt Brittingham went five innings with no earned runs, allowing just four hits. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI single in the first inning.
The Seahawks outhit the Eagles 10-9.
Whitman Stout went 2-for-4 with two singles and was hit by a pitch. Jerry Green went 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
The game was tied at 3-3 until the sixth inning, when the Eagles secured the victory with two runs. Solo homers by Jake Macey and Nolan Oakley in the seventh added insurance runs.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
