Sussex Academy swimming splits meet with Indians

Seahawks girls win South title
January 23, 2023

The Sussex Academy girls’ swim team won its seventh consecutive Henlopen Conference Southern Division title Jan. 20, with a 102-68 victory over Indian River at the Sussex Academy Aquatics Center. The win moves the Seahawks to 9-0 on the season.

The Indian River boys’ team won 103-67. The Indians move to 5-1-1, while the Seahawks squad is 7-2.

“It was a great meet for both teams for both boys and girls,” said Seahawks coach Tom Martiner. “IR really brings out the best in us year after year. We graduated a bunch of boys last year and are actively rebuilding. This win solidifies our seventh consecutive Henlopen South championship for the girls and extends our win streak to 29 going back to Jan. 24, 2020. Hats off to IR and the program they’ve built.”

“It’s so amazing,” said senior Sanne Elling, who has been on the team for five years. “You’re always going to have nerves going into the matches, but it’s always fun to win it again.”

“We have a really good bonding with all the girls on the team,” said junior Gracie Maughen. “It’s awesome.”

IR coach Colin Crandell said his boys’ team is excelling this season.

“These guys are surprising me with their potential,” he said. “They are stepping up and showing me things I didn’t anticipate. It’s now made me reset my goals for them. I’m very excited for them.”
