Sussex East/Sussex West names chili cook-off winners
Residents from Sussex East/Sussex West held an inaugural chili cook-off Oct. 18 at the Manor House in Lewes.
A group of 12 residents brought crockpots of their best chili recipes for a tasting and judging competition.
About 30 residents judged the chilis on color, aroma, consistency, taste and aftertaste. First-place honors went to Dean Gary for his barbecue chili. Second-place kudos went to Blame the Dog chili created by Denny and Fran Shook. Dave Viscusi took third place with his Bite Me Chili.
Once the judging was complete, the chefs packed up the chilis to give to the hungry and homeless at the Shepherd’s Office in Georgetown, where up to 200 people per day are fed. Gene Browning, representing the Shepherd’s Office, picked up the meals and took a moment to speak to those gathered. Browning expressed gratitude and appreciation for the donation of food for the hungry.
Greta Browning of the Shepherd’s Office said of the donation, “What a wonderful event they had. And such giving hearts to donate all of the chili that was left to the Shepherd’s Office. It was used to feed our guests that night at dinner. Full bellies and warm hearts were had by all. We are so thankful for the generosity of the Sussex East and Sussex West communities. Thank you!”
