November 7, 2018

Sussex Technical High School’s Army JROTC cadets raised a record $8,833 for CHEER, Inc., with their annual CHEER Walk tradition on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Oct. 16.

Under the leadership of Battalion Commander Becca Lenhart, a senior from Seaford, the Sussex Tech battalion reached a new fundraising record with its 1½-mile march, eclipsing the old record of $7,400 set in 2007.

About 90 cadets participated from across Sussex County during their in-service day off from school. The top individual fundraiser was Executive Officer Becky Trader, a senior from Georgetown, who raised $746.

Over the last 14 years, Sussex Tech’s Army JROTC cadets have raised $91,000 to benefit CHEER, which provides a variety of services for Sussex County senior citizens.

At Sussex Tech, Army JROTC is an elective class with an emphasis on citizenship, leadership, teamwork and personal responsibility. After-school opportunities include serving on the Raider, drill, and air rifle teams, or as a member of the color guard. Go to sussexvt.k12.de.us/highschool.
