Amongst the stress of high school, many students like myself have found solace within the theater department. The performing arts are so often overlooked as a crucial aspect of education, which is why the Cape community should celebrate Theatre in Our Schools Month this month. Theatre in Our Schools Month brings theater to the forefront, allowing all students a space for self-expression and developing confidence.

The benefits of high school theater are not only limited to the stage. I have participated in the technical crew throughout my entire high school career, learning so many valuable skills along the way. As a freshman, I started off with the lighting board, where I developed focus and quick-thinking skills. Each year, I began learning more of the intricacies of the booth, from the soundboard to spotlights. As a senior, I now work as the assistant stage manager of the booth, in charge of everything from calling cues to troubleshooting tech issues.

As assistant stage manager, I had to take charge of the entire booth, as the only member of the tech crew wearing the coveted headset. Through long rehearsals and stressful show days, I learned how to communicate better than ever before. In a way, I became a translator between our director and our tech crew, making sure the show ran perfectly. Slowly, the role has become the most rewarding part of theater. I couldn’t imagine life without it.

The experiences I have had in the theater program have helped shape me into the person I am today, with important skills I will take into adulthood. I know the same is true for many of my classmates. I encourage you to support Delaware arts education by bringing awareness to the performing arts this March. Theatre in Our Schools Month highlights the benefits of high school theater and allows a gateway into the performing arts for so many others who would benefit from a community like the theatre.
