Former Cape Henlopen High School and University of Virginia baseball player Zack Gelof got the call July 12, and he will join the Oakland Athletics Friday, July 14, when they open a weekend series at home against the Minnesota Twins. Oakland is currently sitting at the bottom of the American League West with a record of 25-67.

Gelof has been playing for the Las Vegas Aviators, the A’s organization’s Triple-A affiliate.

“Zack got the call Wednesday afternoon and soon thereafter he called me,” said Ben Evick, Cape's baseball coach. “He’s been tearing it up for the Aviators while playing second base.”

It’s been quite the week for the Gelof family. On July 9, Zack’s younger brother Jake was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 60th overall pick in the MLB Draft.
