Lewes July 9 Craft Show is One of a Kind

At Historic Complex downtown
June 30, 2011

If artisan craft shows could have a theme, The Lewes Historical Society's Craft Fair Saturday, July 9, at the society's Historic Complex, 110 Shipcarpenter St., would be called One of a Kind.

According to Executive Director Mike DiPaolo, "This year's event promises to be one of the most diverse and impressive cross-sections of professional artisans to exhibit their crafts. The focus of the juried show is one-of-a-kind crafts, and both traditional and contemporary items will be exhibited."

About 80 craft artists from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and other neighboring states have registered to display their work at the craft fair. Gates will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historical Complex. Admission is $5, children under 12 are free, and all proceeds benefit The Lewes Historical Society’s programs in education and preservation.

DiPaolo said crafts include hand-woven Nantucket-style lightship baskets by David Burns of Denver, Pa., and whimsical sculptures out of recycled metal, wonderful for gardens, from Judy Hagen of Millsboro.

Other crafters will include Gary Crowl of Rehoboth Beach, creator of unique collages from driftwood found on Delaware beaches presented in a picture-frame format; Douglass Hain, joining the show from Myerstown, Pa., who uses traditional foundry methods to sand-cast bronze wind bells; John Cooley of Rehoboth Beach, who creates ceramic ware for home and garden decor featuring hand-molded whimsical figures; Virginia Lewis of Lewes, who combines handmade papier maché pieces with antique found objects to create one-of-a-kind decorative pieces and paintings; and Jennifer Nelson of Greenwood, who creates gorgeous block-printed fabrics and home goods made with sustainable materials.

The day will feature live entertainment by the popular bluegrass band Old & New Bluegrass of Easton, Md. Refreshments, sandwiches and baked goods will be available from DK’s Casa Amici throughout the day. For information contact the Lewes Historical Society, 302-645-7670 or go to www.historiclewes.org.
