Bethany Blues to host Delmarva Sports & Social Club kickoff Sept. 20

September 9, 2019

Bethany Blues is known for its stellar social atmosphere, so when Mike Cray approached the Lewes location for sponsorship of a new sports and social club, team members were all ears.

Cray has started two other sports and social clubs, one in Baltimore in 1998, and one in Annapolis in 2004, and each met with huge success. His friend Chad Day had recently moved to the Rehoboth area. Day is the former owner of the Charlottesville Sports & Social Club, and met Cray through playing in the Baltimore club. The two naturally spotted an opening for a new league.

Together, Day and Cray are founding the Delmarva Sports & Social Club, with Miller Light, Arnold Palmer Spiked and Terrapin Beer as the official beverage sponsors. The club offers a noncompetitive, positive, sports-forward atmosphere for adults to have fun and meet new friends after their games at Bethany Blues.

With more than 21 years of social sports experience, the two founders know firsthand the value of relationships made through sports friendships that last longer than any memory of a game won or lost. The Delmarva club’s motto is “For people who enjoy sports but love to socialize."

The league is kicking off its inaugural fall season with kickball and touch football. All the teams are coed, and only for adults 21 and older.

Starting Sept. 21, Saturdays belong to touch football at Beacon Middle School from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beginning Sept. 25, the club will use the Rehoboth Little League fields for kickball from 6:15 to 10:15 p.m.

The cost is $49 to sign up for coed kickball and $55 for coed touch football. The fee includes league T-shirts, umpires and referees, field rental, lined fields and sponsor bar specials. There are several ways to join the league. The first is individual membership. If a few friends want to join together, they can sign on as a small group. Teams will combine the individuals and the small groups. Finally, those with 12 players or more can sign up together as a single team. Cray and Day are pros at having everything set and ready to go so that all players have to do is show up and enjoy playing sports in a heady environment.

Bethany Blues will be the home base and social space for club members. Club members will get access to specials, and they will host the kickoff happy hour for the Delmarva Sports & Social Club from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, for both kickball and football leagues.
