Cape wrestling flattens Polytech 69-9 on Teacher Appreciation Night

The Cape Henlopen wrestling team rode the positive wave of Teacher Appreciation Night Feb. 5 to defeat Polytech 69-9 behind seven pins and three forfeits.

Cape got wins by pin from Holt Baker (106), Josh Wright (113), CJ Fritchman (126), Mikey Frederick (145), John Bender (160), Jackson Handlin (195) and Cam Smith (220). 

Bryan Garcia (132), Finbar Rishko (152) and Lucas Ruppert (285) were awarded forfeits, totaling 18 team points.

Luke Bender (138) won by tech fall, while Andre Currie (170) won a major decision. 

Polytech’s Michael Rodriguez won by fall at 120, while Greg Long won by decision at 182. 

Cape will wrestle at St. George’s Tech Friday, Feb. 7, then grapple with Sussex Tech Saturday, Feb. 8, with JV matches beginning at noon.  

“We should be fine the next two matches if we wrestle up to our potential,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “By the end of the day on Saturday, we should know who we’re wrestling in the state duals, which begin on Wednesday, Feb. 12.”

St. George’s lost to William Penn Feb. 5 43-24. Sussex Tech lost to Smyrna 71-0.
