The Georgetown/Millsboro senior all-stars escaped with a 4-2 victory over Cape June 26 in Millsboro. The loss puts Cape in the bottom bracket of the District 3 tournament to play Laurel/Nanticoke at 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, while Mid-Sussex advances to face Lower Sussex at 6 p.m.
Mid-Sussex took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and held it until the sixth, when the Cape squad got two across to garner a 2-1 lead. A hit by Mid–Sussex’s Luce Perfetti drove in two runs in the seventh and scored on a ground out to take the 4-2 lead that held up for the final.
Cape outhit the MId-Sussex team 6-5. Malachi Woods went 2-for-3 in the game. William Burke, Mason Clews and Chase Hitchens each had a hit. Cameron Hartstein went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Cade Cooper led Mid-Sussex with a 2-for-2 game, picking up an RBI. Connor Wilson, Perfetti and Chet Furmanek each had a hit.
Pete Onuschak went the distance on the mound for Mid-Sussex, picking up 14 strikeouts.
Jacob Smith tossed four innings for Cape, striking out six. Colby Jester came in from the bullpen to strike out two.
Cape softball stays alive
Cape stayed alive in the District 3 major softball tournament June 26, with an 11-1 win over Lower Sussex in the lower bracket. Cape won its first game of the tournament 17-5 before falling 12-1 to Georgetown. Cape will now play Millsboro, a 12-7 winner over Woodbridge in the other lower bracket game June 26 in Laurel. The winner of the Cape-Millsboro game will play the loser of the Georgetown-Laurel game.
