Cape boys' track all about 'Jump Street'

Dre Miller's 47-8 is Cape's third best triple jump last 42 years

Cape boys' track coach Matt Lindell is calm and steady like a career diplomat. And he is tough yet fair. All kinds of kids like him because he is easy to be around and he listens to his athletes and their stories, including the crazy explanations and mystifying excuses.

Lindell himself defies categorization, from his position as teacher and coach to his work with the Department of Instruction and Advanced Placement curriculum with social studies to his election last week to the school board of the Capital School District.

The Cape boys are back in business under Lindell as they proved at the Henlopen Conference meet, placing third with 76 points behind Caesar Rodney 160 and Milford 157.

“We scored in every event but two and re-established Cape as 'Jump Street' with Jeremiah [Cohen] winning the high jump at 6-feet-6-inches and Dre Miller in the long jump at 22-3 and triple jump at 47-8," said Lindell.

Miller's triple jump ranks third on the 42-year all-time list behind Kai Maull and Vincent Glover. Cape freshman Sam Young also tied a freshman record in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet.

Cape's spring relays ran fast times as the 4-by-100-meter team of Tyreik Burton, Raekwan Dukes, Chris Stigile and Dom Brisco ran 44.7 to place second; the 4-by-200 team using the same runners ran 1:33.6.

Mike Miller had a good day in the shot, 39-6, and discus, 115-4, contributing 5 points to the team.
