November 4, 2025

The Cape field hockey team played around and stayed around the semifinal game versus Padua for too long Nov. 3, scoring with 1:55 left in the third period. Atia Sabbagh scored off an assist from Grace Heers for a 1-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Vikings dominated possession and position the entire game, putting 13 shots on goal to none for the Pandas. They also held a 15-0 advantage in penalty corners in the eventual 3-0 victory.

Sabbagh scored again with 7:28 left in the game. That was followed by the final goal from Heers, clinching a berth in the state championship game against Smyrna. The Eagles defeated Caesar Rodney 8-0 in the other semifinal matchup.

Padua goalie Molly Murphy, just a freshman, recorded nine saves in the game.

Cape and Smyrna will meet in the championship game for the fifth straight year, with the Vikings holding a 3-1 advantage. Cape holds a 6-3 advantage over the last nine matchups. Cape is 16-1, all wins by shutout, but the lone loss was a 3-2 overtime defeat to Smyrna at Champions Stadium.

Newark Charter will play Wilmington Friends for the Division II title at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, followed by Cape versus Smyrna at 6:30 p.m. at Rullo Stadium on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark.
