Windsor’s Flowers & Plants marks 39th year with annual Christmas Open House Nov. 18

November 11, 2012

Windsor's Flowers & Plants locations in Lewes and Rehoboth will open their doors to the public in a celebration of the holidays and their 39th year in business in Sussex County from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18.

The afternoon will offer beverages, light refreshments, door prizes and treats.  Each customer will receive a free 6-inch pansy as well as 20 percent off all Christmas merchandise and 50 percent off all fall items, cash and carry.

In 1973, Jay and Janet Windsor acquired McNichol's Flowers in Lewes and Crosby’s Flowers in Rehoboth Beach. They eventually changed the names to Windsor’s Flowers & Plants in Rehoboth and Windsor’s Plant Outlet in Lewes.

The Windsors had opened Lakeside Greenhouses in Laurel in 1972 when Jay was working as a county agent for the University of Delaware. With the 1973 purchases in Rehoboth and Lewes, he left the University of Delaware to manage the family businesses, returning to it in 1986.

Daughter Jill and her husband Craig Rice continued their work at the 14,000-square-foot Laurel Greenhouses, eventually taking over management of that location and later, the plant outlet in Lewes.

In 1996, after a 15-year term in the U.S. Navy, son James "Jim" Windsor joined the business full time and now manages the Rehoboth Beach flower shop and greenhouse.

The old red barn, approximately 1,600 square feet, now houses the flower shop and offices in Rehoboth Beach. The barn originally belonged to the duPont family; it was where they kept horses on Bay Vista Road. Bob Raley originally purchased the red barn and moved it to its present location to open a flower shop.  It is currently at 20326 Coastal Highway next to Arena’s and Big Fish Grill.

The original flower shop in Lewes, about 1,600 square feet, was built by the McNichol family around 1928 at its current location, 1548 Savannah Road.

Windsor's Flowers and Plants offers a variety of fresh flowers, indoor and outdoor plants, mulch, gourmet baskets, specialty garden items, gifts and much more. Weddings, funerals and special events are among the many offered services.

Windsor’s Flowers & Plants is the oldest established florist and garden center business in the beach area. It has served the Cape area for the past 37 years and expects to continue serving many loyal customers for years to come.
