Beacon track team keeps winning streak going ... barely

April 14, 2017

The Beacon Middle School track and field team topped the Selbyville girls 56-53 in Selbyville last week in what was the closest meet in eight years. This past Wednesday, the tough Selbyville team came to Lewes, and the Beacon girls squeaked out an even closer meet 55-54 to run the dual-meet win streak to 71.

The meet produced quality performances with athletes giving it their all everywhere you looked. Four girls ran under 27.5 seconds in the 200 meters, which does not happen often even in high school meets. Selbyville won the girls’ 4-by-200-meter relay in a new school record of 1:52, with Beacon close behind in 1:53. These are two teams that go to battle, then hug each other and say, “great job.” It was great to see the effort, the performances and the sportsmanship among all the middle school programs.

Mariner track & field

The Mariner Middle School boys’ track team competed valiantly and set countless personal bests in a 55-54 loss to Selbyville April 12 at Cape.

The Vikings won 8 of 13 events over Selbyville, but couldn't muster the depth needed to prevail. The Vikings defeated Beacon and Seaford.

Jordan Jefferson won the 100-meter, 200-meter and 800-meter races. Isaiah Fillyau took top honors in the 55 hurdles and long jump. James Wells won the high jump and was part of the 4-by-200 relay team with Dajour Bailey, Dawson Clifton and Deven Wilson.

The Mariner girls’ track team couldn't have given another ounce of effort, setting personal records all over the place in a 71-38 defeat at the hands of Selbyville. The Lady Vikings stuck close with Beacon before falling 64-45 and trounced Seaford by more than 50 points.

Nataleigh Hunter won the 55 hurdles and 100-meter race, and finished second in the 200-meter race. Reagan Ciabatttoni took first in the 400-meter race and the triple jump. Samantha Jacona recorded two second places in the 1,600-meter and 800-meter races.
