The loss to Salesianum cut deeply, but the Cape boys’ lacrosse team healed its wounds by getting back in the winner’s column with a 21-3 running-clock victory over Caesar Rodney May 1 at Legends Stadium. The Vikings move to 9-3 on the season.
There were 10 different goal scorers in the game. Grant Conway led with five goals and an assist. Carter Nemcic hit the twine four times and had an assist. Brenner Short and Liam Crotty each had three goals. Short had three assists, while Crotty had one. AJ Grapski, Marshall Keys, Eric Uffelman, Ryan Morgan, Channing Smith and Jaxson Holgerson each scored one goal.
Grapski, Keys and Smith also had a helper in the game.
Cape senior Mason Trench started between the pipes and made three saves, while junior Patrick Little came in to make six saves during his tenure in the crease.
“I think that having 10 separate goal scorers helped show how well [balanced] our team is,” said Morgan. “It was a big bounce-back game, which was played with high intensity all four quarters.”
“We came out very fast,” said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. “That’s what they needed to do to make themselves understand the speed they have to play. We also did it in the third quarter, which I was very happy about. That’s something we’ve been lacking in some games. We subbed it up very early, giving everybody some playing time.”
“We needed this game after the Sallies game,” said middie Braddock Smith. “We played hard and we knew what we had to do. It was nice to have everyone get in the game.”
Cape travels to Philadelphia Tuesday, May 5, to play St. Joe’s Prep.
