Cape boys take third at Patrick Henry Invitational in Virginia

The Vikings of Cape Henlopen traveled to Poor Farm Park in Ashland, Va., Sept. 28 for the Patrick Henry Invitational, competing with 16 other teams from the Mid-Atlantic region.

In the girls’ varsity race, Mary Kehoe, a junior out of St. Gertrude High School, recorded the fastest time of the day of 19:49 to win the title. Cape freshman Katie Kuhlman finished fifth in a time of 20:37 to lead the local charge.  

“Katie ran a good race and was competitive with the leaders, which was nice to see,” said coach Matt Lindell.

Sophomore Mia Nuebling finished 28th in a time of 22:23, while freshman Ariana Adili-Khams moved up to the No. 3 spot for Cape with a great race of 22:26 for 31st place. Sophomore Elizabeth Melson finished 33rd in a time of 22:43, while junior Lindsay Rambo was 38th in 22:58. Freshman Peyton Evans finished 40th in 23:04, while junior Taylor Johnson was 69th in 24:38. Rounding out the top seven for the Vikings was junior Caroline Maull in 71st in 24:44.

In the boys’ varsity race, senior Nate Jennings out of Colonial Heights High School ran a blistering time of 16:12 for the fastest finish of the day. For the Vikings, it was sophomore Ethan Edery finishing 11th in 17:01, while sophomore Julian Callaway was 15th in a time of 17:23. Sophomore Hunter Jones finished 26th in 17:53, while freshman Ryan Baker broke 18 minutes with a great race of 17:55, good for 28th place. Junior Alan Howard was 30th in 18:00, while senior Sam Epstein was 50th in 18:50. Rounding out the Cape varsity team was junior Daniel Adili-Khams in a time of 19:14 for 61st place.

“Cape ran great even with the early morning travel,” said Jeremy Dobrinski, the coach at Patrick Henry High School and formerly a Caesar Rodney High School runner.

Mariner cross country 

The Mariner boys' and girls' cross country teams handily defeated Woodbridge Sept. 30 in Lewes, with the boys winning 21-38 and the girls triumphing by a 17-46 tally. Jackson Isaacs paced the boys by leading a 1-2-3 sweep with a 12:33 clocking for 1.86 miles. He was followed home by Jia Han Xie, who took second in 12:35, and Merric Mumford, who placed third in 12:47. Also scoring varsity points for the boys were Connor Pencek (seventh, 13:57), Jay'Lier Long (eighth, 14:08), Jeremiah Hayes (ninth, 14:13) and Ryan Zachos (10th, 14:52).

On the girls' side, Ali Stevenson continued her winning ways by outsprinting Brooke Terhune in the final strides. The teammates placed first and second in 13:18 and 13:19. Terhune, just a sixth-grader, improved on her time from last week's meet at the same course by more than three minutes. Olivia Burkentine put up a solid showing to take third in 14:23, while Sara Dawson came up big to place fifth in 14:47. Also scoring varsity points were Lilly Fisher (sixth, 15:07), Liv Longo (seventh, 15:53) and Mollie Skipper (eighth, 16:09). The Vikings face Sussex Academy and Laurel Monday, Oct. 7at the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment beginning at 4 p.m.

Bits and pieces

The Seashore Striders will host the annual Chipotle Fundraiser this Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Rehoboth Tanger Outlets. Show your team spirit by joining us for this fundraiser to support the youth cross country team. Chipotle is located at 36453 Seaside Outlet Drive. Raffle tickets for an iPad Air will also be available to purchase at the fundraiser. The youth Striders will compete at the Brandywine Invitational as part of the Wilmington CYM Series on Sunday, Oct. 13at Brandywine Creek State Park beginning at 1 p.m. The Herring Point Five and Dime will also be held the same day, taking off from Herring Point at 9 a.m.

The Dogfish Dash took to the streets in Milton last weekend with 3,260 registered participants and over 2,500 finishers. The event raised $185,000 for the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and full results can be found at www.seashorestriders.com.
