Cape girls’ tennis is back

March 10, 2022

The Cape girls’ tennis team is dealing with chilly temperatures and windy conditions while preparing for the 2022 season. They went 8-2 in 2021.

“Coach [Dave] Shook and I are returning for our seventh season coaching the girls’ varsity tennis team at Cape,” said head coach Laurie Carter. “We feel certain that we have created a real tennis culture over these past few years, and the talent certainly shows itself in this year‘s lineup. We haven’t lost any singles players from last year and have two of the four doubles players returning as well. There is new talent and past talent that is greatly improved, so we are very, very confident that we will place well in all Henlopen Conference matches. The March weather is challenging at best, and we are outdoors fighting hard against wind and cold to put our best team on the courts.”

Sam Connors, Noa Aboutboul and Mackenzie Vitolo will return at the singles positions. Challenges are still being played to find the final doubles positions.

“We have been third each and every year in the conference tournament behind Caesar Rodney and Dover, or Dover and Caesar Rodney,” said Carter. “I am looking forward to this year being first, but we’ll see. We haven’t finished all of our challenge matches and have many more to come the rest of this week and next week.”

“I’m excited for our tennis season this year,” Connors said. “The girls have been putting in a lot of effort in the off-season, and we are hoping it will pay off. We are looking to be competitive and successful in our conference this year. Last year, we placed third at conferences and are hoping to improve on that. We have an amazing group of hardworking girls who are ready to compete.”

The Lady Vikings will open conference play with Smyrna Tuesday, March 22, at home.
