Cape soccer comes back to tame Bulldogs

September 28, 2022

The Vikings soccer team showed resilience Sept. 27, as they held off a strong Laurel squad and powered to a 4-2 home victory.

“We started slow,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “We picked up the pace once we realized we were battling multiple sicknesses on the team. On top of that, Laurel came to play. It was a perfect storm in regard to underperforming. It was the first time that we were truly tested and had to overcome adversity in a match this season.”

The Bulldogs drew first blood with a goal at the 10-minute mark from Ed Mazariegos. Cape’s Aldo Hernandez-Becerra hit the twine to tie the game off an assist from Collin Sivels. Nick Panyko added the Vikings’ second goal at 19 minutes from Hernandez-Becerra. Jose Zelaya tied the game for Laurel at 37 minutes. The half ended with the teams tied at 2-2.

Cape turned on the afterburners in the second half, dominating play and getting scores from Hernandez-Becerra and Jack Schell to garner the Vikings’ sixth victory on the season.

The Vikings outshot the Bulldogs 13-5 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Cape keeper Dru Schneider made four saves, while Noah Ros had nine stops for the Bulldogs.
