Cape soccer tames the Wildcats 2-1

April 28, 2022

Cape soccer moved to 6-2 on the season with a tight 2-1 win over Delmar April 26 at Champions Stadium. The Vikings are 6-2, while Delmar moves to 4-4.

Cape senior Giselle Garcia scored at the 34-minute mark off a pass from Laurelee Mobius to make the game 1-0. Jo Ingerski hit the twine off a pass from Charlotte Bjorkland at 49:00.

Delmar’s Baylie Phillips cut the lead in half at the 61-minute mark and brought full-out offensive pressure for the remainder of the contest, but the Vikings’ defense held to garner the 2-1 victory.

Brianna Burrell made six stops for the Vikings, while Delmar keeper Lily Baker made five saves.

“We got a big boost from a first-half goal with the wind in our face,” said Cape coach Tyler Nichols, who was in charge while head coach Patrick Kilby was out due to illness. “We were also helped by the change of moving Shannon Rath into the central midfield. She helped us defensively there. Delmar really pushed for the goal to tie the game in the last few minutes, but we were able to grind out the result with a strong defensive effort.”

The Vikings play host to 8-2 Caesar Rodney Thursday, April 28, at Champions Stadium.
