Cape softball finishes regular season undefeated
The Cape softball team finished the regular season 18-0 with a 9-2 win over Padua on Senior Day May 14 at Bill Cordrey Field. The Pandas are 9-6 with three games remaining.
Cape outhit Padua 11-3. The Pandas committed four costly errors.
The Vikings scored a run in the first. After an error allowed Ava Calciano to reach base, the senior stole second and advanced to third on a base hit by Alivia Heers. She scored on a wild pitch.
That score held until the top of the fourth when Padua went up 2-1.
Senior Abi Crouch delivered a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to boost the Vikings back into the lead for good. Crouch singled in the fifth to score courtesy runner Lily Phile and finish with three RBIs in the game.
“I knew we were down one and that we had two runners on that I needed to get in,” said Crouch. “The only thought in my head was to hit the ball.”
Abby Marsh, Eden Frederick and Milena Buehler each had two hits in the contest. Calciano passed the 100-career hit mark with two singles in the game.
Marsh went the distance in the circle, picking up 11 strikeouts.
“It was a great team win and awesome Senior Day,” said Calciano. “Abby was amazing, and we had a lot of people contribute on offense. We’re excited for the conference championship and state tournament.”
The Vikings host Lake Forest Friday, May 16, for the Henlopen Conference Championship.
