Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 hosted its annual Hoop Shoot contest Jan. 14 at The Factory near Lewes. The competition is a basketball free-throw competition for youngsters ages 8-13.
Competitors begin at the local level. If victorious, they advance to the district, state, regional and national competitions. Winners of each age group are the boys and girls who make the most of 25 free-throw attempts. Prizes are provided to each participant.
Coming in first in the 8-9 girls’ division was Jeweliana Henry. The 8-9 boys’ group was won by Peyton Jones. The 10-11 girls’ category was won by McKenzie Bean. The 10-11 boys’ winner was Justin Decondido. The 12-13 girls’ division was won by Mia Scott. The 12-13 boys’ group was won by Robbie Myers.
“This was my second year as the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge director,” said Mary DiGennaro. “Today was a huge success with the turnout of boys and girls. I am proud to say we almost doubled the amount of kids competing from last year, and it’s the most the lodge has ever seen. I am hoping that we continue to spread the word for next year and continue to make this event one that the boys and girls look forward to competing in.”
