The unbeaten Cape junior varsity team, under the direction of coach Drew Messick, beat Sussex Tech 18-2 in the opening game May 6. Sussex Tech has restarted its program with a JV team only with seven seniors on the squad.
“I know many of these Cape girls, so I know what we’re in for," said coach Anthoiny Carmen before the game. "I come from the boys' side. My daughter Stella is a junior and assistant coach Mallory Reed had daughters Payton, a senior, and Dylan, a freshman. The kids have been great; they just want to play and learn and get better.”
Cape throttled back early, moving leading scorers back to defense, but all players on the Cape roster have shooting skills, including goalie Dylan Peck, who had a goal to go along with three saves.
Scorers for Cape were Delainey Smith, Meredith Frederick and Blair Chubb each with three; Venice Strebs and Annabell Bonk with two; and single goals from Alyssa Flamini, Ariana Cornescu, Linley Draper, Daisy Hughes, Harper Derrick and Mackenzie Kupa.
“I’ll miss this group. Not only are they great players, but they also have great team chemistry," said Messick. “They really supported one another and have the entire season.”
The Cape varsity team followed with a 20-0 win over Lake Forest. The Spartans are 0-11, having been shut out seven times and scoring only one goal three times.
Goal scorers for Cape were: Mackenzie Todd with three; Avary Miller, Claire Lopez and Regan Best each with two; and scoring one goal were Hazel Mancari, Alexis Zolper, Amara Fruchtman, Cora Conway, Ally Diehl, Amalia Fruchtman, Mairead Rishko, Mikaela Gordon, Alysa McCarthy, Layla Conn and Kemper Cox.
Assists were recorded by Best with four, Lopez with two, and Zolper and Cox each with one.
Lake Forest wrestling coach Mike Hansen volunteers with the team, as his daughter Alexis is a sophomore on the squad. Head coach Laurel Sweet has daughters Amelia, a freshman, and Abigail, a senior, on the team. Alana Aguilar is a varsity assistant.
"Most of our kids not only have no lacrosse experience, they also have no sports experience,” Hansen said. “We’re all just trying to keep this sport going.”
Youth Night players come mostly for Atlantic Lacrosse. Most of the kids are from the fourth grade on down.
