Armed with popsicle sticks, paper and U.S. flags, Love Creek Elementary students created small gifts sure to have a big impact.

Through a project sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 in Lewes, Love Creek Elementary students folded pocket flags and wrote notes for deployed soldiers Nov. 28.

Murt Foos, president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17, said flags will be given to two units being deployed from Dover Air Force Base in January.

“We fold small flags for soldiers’ pockets so they’ll always have a piece of home with them,” she said. “We give them to soldiers being deployed to wish them safe travels and a safe journey home.”

Moos said the project also teaches students about patriotism and service.

“The younger they are when they learn about veterans, service and respect for the flag, the better understanding they’ll have,” she said.

Cape High JROTC Cadet Davi Martins explained to students the meaning of the 13 folds of the flag while Cape’s Color Guard folded a U.S. flag.

Foos added that, when folded, the flags’ triangle shape symbolizes President George Washington’s colonial hat.

Cape High JROTC Sgt. 1st Class Richard Hurt helped several students fold their flags, and was touched when fourth-grader Lincoln Rose presented him with his folded flag and note.

“He thanked me for my service, and wanted me to keep his flag,” Hurt said, stuffing the flag into his own pocket.
