Midway Lions conclude season by awarding first Thomas Coco Scholarship to Leo Maya Doumit

July 7, 2012

The Midway Lions held their last meeting of the 2011-12 season June 18 at Irish Eyes in Lewes before a two-month summer hiatus.

The meeting was well attended and featured the induction of officers for the 2012-13 season. The induction was performed by IPDG Karl Gude of Lions District 22D. King Lion Fran Daly will once again hold the office of president with Lion Fernando Rios inducted as vice president, Lion Kathleen Greene as secretary and Lion Walt Petzold  as treasurer. The directors for the 2012-13 season were also inducted.

A highlight of the meeting was the awarding of the first Thomas Coco Scholarship. The recipient of this honor in the amount of $1,000 was Leo Maya Doumit, president of Cape Henlopen High School Leo Club. Leo clubs, open to students in grades eight through 12, are community service organizations and also can be gateways to Lions Club membership in adulthood. Doumit will be attending Penn State University as a premed student.

Coco was pleased to present this award. He has worked for more than 10 years to raise money with only one goal in mind, to enable the Midway Lions to award a scholarship each year to a deserving student.

Doumit thanked the Midway Lions for choosing her for this honor and said she feels being a member of the Leo Club has helped her make a positive impact on people’s lives. She has racked up more than 100 hours of volunteerism through her membership in the Leo Club and the National Honor Society.

Midway Lions will resume their monthly meetings Tuesday, Sept. 3, then return to their regular schedule of first and third Mondays, September through June, at Irish Eyes in Lewes.
