Born Dec. 1, 1933, Dick was a land developer by trade, and in his teen years spent quality time with baseball coaches in the neighborhood where he grew up -  Anacostia, a suburb in Washington, D.C. Dick attended Anacostia High School, and soon after joined the Army and traveled the world playing baseball to entertain military troops. After his military career, Dick played baseball for the Washington Senators Farm League. Dick was also a talented singer. In his younger years he sang with The Singing Cedars men’s group. He later formed the successful club band Friendship, and toured with bandmembers Barry Darvel, Tammy Lynn and their band.

Dick leaves behind his loving wife, Maureen Machmuller Grimes; daughter, Cheryl Altman and husband Marc; daughter Julie Hulley and husband Bob; son Richard Lloyd Grimes II; and daughter Chelsea Grimes-Heidenberger and husband Alex. Dick also leaves behind nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and his Labrador Retrievers, Ruby and Rosie, who were always by his side. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Walter Lloyd Grimes and his mother, Mildred D’Andelet-Grimes, as well as his brother, Walter Grimes, and daughter, Sharleen Grimes Stannis.

Dick attributed the success of his childhood and teen years to the dedicated baseball coaches in the Anacostia and Washington, D.C. area.
