The Sussex Academy girls’ lacrosse team used its superior speed, stick skills, passing, dodging, shooting and tenacious defense to dominate Wilmington Friends 15-5 on a blistering afternoon May 21 in Georgetown.

The 15-1 Seahawks move into the DIAA semifinals Tuesday, May 24, at Delaware State University.

“I think the main contributor to our win was that we have a deep roster and we were able to utilize that to our advantage with the heat,” said Seahawks head coach Taylor Gooch. “Every girl on our team wants it and is willing to do whatever it takes, which showed up in a good team win. They enjoyed the moment and were present in the game, and that is the best way to play lacrosse.”

The Seahawks outshot the Quakers 41-16.

Annabella Guckes led the Seahawks with four goals and two assists. Macy Steinwedel and Shelby Manlove each tallied three goals and an assist. Lilian Manlove and Madison Leeper each hit the twine twice, and Leeper was credited with an assist. Callie Short and Sanne Elling each scored once. Rilyn Lehman and Addison Basile each contributed a helper.

Friends eighth-grader Molly Dolan scored twice for the Quakers. Ana Pardo, Alexandra Donahue and Elizabeth Hebert each tallied one score.

Sussex Academy keeper Peyton Hagy made five saves, while Friends goalie Lucy Wood was credited with 16.
