Very first Kayak Concert takes place on Red Mill Pond

Bettenroo duo gets back on ‘stage’ after being sidelined by COVID-19

Like many local musicians, Bettenroo’s Anne Davey and Lori Jacobs have been sidelined by performance cancellations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Delaware-based duo got back into action Sept. 24 to perform at, of all places, a dock on Red Mill Pond between Lewes and Milton. It was the idea of Lisa Weidenbush, who turned her Overbrook Shores backyard into a mini-concert venue, setting up socially distanced seating areas to allow attendees a space of their own.

Dozens of music lovers, many of whom walked from their homes in the neighborhood, attended the concert. Although she provided land-based seating, Weidenbush said the idea behind what she called the Kayak Concert was to get as many people as possible to attend in their boats, kayaks and canoes. Many did just that as they paddled and motored to the concert.

Weidenbush said it’s important to support local musicians, especially during a time when they are struggling. She said an outdoor venue offers an option for musicians during this time of COVID-19 restrictions. “This is the first annual, and there will be more,” she said.

The Bettenroo duo, which sings covers and their own songs, has a limited schedule for the fall, with upcoming performances at Bluecoast in Rehoboth Beach and Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery in Frankford. Go to bettenroo.com for more information.
