Cape boys’ volleyball won the first game against unbeaten Salesianum 25-17 at the Big House April 22. A large crowd was on its feet after every Cape point, inspired by the team and head coach Tyler Coupe, who came across the floor after game one and said, “We need you guys to stay with us.”
Sallies won the second game 25-17, setting up the pivotal game three. With the score tied at 22-22, the high-in-the-sky official made two carry calls against Cape, and Salesiaum won 25-22. Sallies jumped to an 11-point lead in the fourth game and held on for a 25-18 win to secure the 3-1 match victory and remain unbeaten at 10-0.
The Vikings lost their second consecutive game to fall to 8-2.
Coupe said, “A good loss for us. [We] got the experience of playing in a tight match, and we figured out a way to win a set against a team better than us ... a vital step in early program growth. Positive things to learn from the loss – a good stepping stone.” Coupe added, “[It was] also fun to go against my former coach [Jeff Gricol]. He hasn’t changed his demeanor or style in 20-some years. A beast of a coach/program.”
Cape was led at the net by Odin Potemski with 15 kills, Brady Lamb with 11 and Alex Patterson with nine. Setup man Ethan Shuttleworth dominated with 35 assists.
Salesianum was powered at the net by killers Christian Sullivan with eight and Veryl Burns with seven. Ronan Landis and Cody Popp each tallied 15 assists, while Aiden Dietrich worked the backline with 15 digs.
Salesianum will play at Delaware Military Academy Tuesday, April 26, in a battle of unbeaten teams.
