Cape boys’ lax carves up Smyrna 23-2

Vikings host Indian River May 20 for conference crown
May 18, 2023

Smyrna lacrosse fans showed up at Legends Stadium in large numbers May 17, cheering loudly for every face-off win, every ground ball picked up and each goalie save.

The Eagles, under coach Tom Incontrera, are a collection of rugged athletes who can catch and throw, and they don’t do dumb stuff. They entered the game with a 9-5 record.

Cape commenced to methodically dissect the Eagles’ defense, jacking it up for a 19-1 halftime lead, then shutting it down in the second half to win 23-2.

Fourteen different players scored for Cape, with 12 of the 23 goals coming off assists.

Goal scorers for Cape versus Smyrna were: Jack Schell with four; Brexton Carter with three; Joe Coveleski, Luke Burton, Ryan Morgan and Anderson Smith with two each; and single goals from Mike Guenther, C.J. Fritchman, Cody Trivits, Jahden Cannon, Burke Healy, Evan Burris, Andrew Wolak and Hank Anderson.

Assists were: Burton with three, Guenther with two, and single assists from Trivits, Cannon, Thomas Gibbs, Jack Huss, Brady Mauro and Morgan.

Mason Trench had two saves, while Gus Musika had four.

Smyrna’s stats were not available.

Cape has outscored seven Henlopen Conference opponents by a total score of 162-10.

Cape will host Southern Division champion Indian River for the Henlopen Conference Championship at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 20, at Legends Stadium.

The Indians are 11-4 on the season. Caesar Rodney beat Indian River 19-2 May 9, while Cape beat the Riders 20-5 April 26.

The postseason DIAA brackets will be released Sunday. There are some fat-cat records as a result of soft schedules.

The talk outside the fence by veteran lacrosse watchers was that anything other than Sallies and Cape being in opposite brackets would be a travesty.
