Cape celebrates during a time-out.The Cape boys’ lacrosse team fell to a talented Salesianum squad 11-4 April 28 at the Vikings’ Legends Stadium. Cape moves to 8-3, while Sallies improves to 6-2.
Cape surprised Sallies by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Grant Conway and Brenner Short, then went to 3-1, but the Vikings couldn’t overcome Sallies’ powerful defense.
“I thought we came out ready to play,” said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. “The boys played hard. Defensively, I was happy with how we played, and Mason Trench had a very good game in goal. Offensively, we need to be better at finishing, but we earned good looks against a very good defense, so that’s something we can build on moving forward.”
Carter Nemcic and Braddock Smith added Cape’s two other goals. Assists were credited to Short, Conway and Smith. Trench made 15 saves in the game.
“I thought the team played well during the first half,” said Trench. “However, I think this game taught us a lot about ourselves, and we need to work on putting out 48 minutes of smart lacrosse.”
The matchup was Cape lacrosse’s annual Scott Brozey game, which raised $2,800 for the Scott Brozey Lead By Example Memorial Scholarship.
