Cape girls’ lax rolls Charter 19-4, moves to semifinals

Mendes scores 100th point of season with three goals and five assists

Quarterfinal Saturday was all about semifinal Tuesday at Champions Stadium, as Cape easily dispatched the Charter Force 19-4 to earn a matchup with Tower Hill at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 24, at Delaware State University. 

Sussex Academy, a 15-5 winner over Wilmington Friends, will face Tatnall in the 7 p.m. semifinal. The Hornets beat Archmere Academy 20-6. 

“Survive and advance is the mission in the tournament, and you did that today,” Cape coach Lindsey Eichner told her players after the game. “It was really hot, and all of you played so hard. I am very proud of you.” 

Molly Mendes, with three goals and five assists in the game, achieved a single-season milestone of 100 points. Mendes received a box of candy after the game. Also honored was defender Montana Jones, who scored her first varsity goal on her first shot, giving MoJo a shooting percentage of .1000. 

Cape goals in the game were from Ella Rishko with six, Lulu Rishko and Mendes with three each, Kelly Bragg and Grace Wiggins with two each, and Jones, Landon Diehl and Lina Frederick with one apiece. 

Assists were Mendes with five and one each from Sierra Manifold and Lulu Rishko. 

Cape outshot Charter 26-11. 

Charter goals were from Mollie Marshall with two, and Elle Toth and Emma Gaz each with one. 

The winners of Tuesday’s semifinal games will play for the state championship at Delaware State at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 26.

Margaret Murphy of Charter and Ella Rishko of Cape were presented with the DIAA Crown Award for Academic Excellence before the game.
