Everybody knows somebody at Taste of Sposato 5K run

Cap hockey to celebrate 50 years Saturday, Sept. 29
September 25, 2018

Everybody knows your name - Daisy Hughes is the face everyone knows at a saturated Sunday morning 5K run sponsored by Taste of Sposato Wines. The 7-year-old was second in her age group, running 37:18, edged out by her 9-year-old sister Lelia, who ran 35:19. D.J. Hughes, 42, ran 25:51 and Alison Hughes, 41, ran 43:32. The event is an amalgamation of friends generating funds that go toward an agricultural scholarship for Delaware Technical Community College. First responder Allen Jackson, 50, ran 26:32. Everyone in the 684 loves Allen and Mark Brainard, 59, Del Tech president, who ran 27:17. David Mushrush, 39, ran 24:56, while his wife Sarah Mushrush, 33, ran 28:09. Reginaldo Hernandez, 18, from Georgetown was the overall winner in 18:29. The event was like walking into the IGA or Tom Best stores 40 years ago where you expected to know everyone, and you did.

Cape football - The Vikings dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 21-13 road loss Friday to Northeastern High from Pasadena, Md. Cape’s three away losses came against Delmar, Suitland and Northeast, who have a combined record of 11-0. Cape will open at home Friday night hosting Smyrna. The Eagles have won the last two Division I state championships. Smyrna is 0-2 on the season, having lost to Middletown (3-0) and Franklin High of Maryland (3-1). Cape scored touchdowns against Northeast on an 8-yard run by Joe Kirby and a 16-yard pass from Steven Huey to Curtis Purnell. Cape had a total of 100 rushing yards for the game and another 100 yards passing. Danny Baker of Northeast scored on touchdown runs of 92, 69 and 60 yards. “I’m proud of our guys. We played the best we have all season and are getting better,” said Coach J.D. Maull. “This is a process, and we will get there.”

Get 50, Bill! There was an expression when I first came to Cape in 1975, “Get 50!” That meant back off, and everyone was called Bill. Slick transition ... this is the 50th year of Cape sports and the field hockey team will celebrate the milestone Saturday, Sept. 29, at a home game versus Our Lady of Good Counsel. The JV game starts at 11 a.m. There will be a recognition ceremony at halftime of the JV game honoring all former players and coaches who have contributed to the amazing success over a long time, which includes middle schools that used to be junior high schools. Cape field hockey coaches include Carolyn Ivins, Sue Myers, Sherri Cook, Ruth Skoglund, Gretchen Wyshock , Mike Eisenhour, Amanda Jacona, Nicole Hughes and Kate Austin. Adele Mears played on the 1979 state championship team and national championship team at Old Dominion, and Carrie Lingo played on the 1995 state title team and national championship team at North Carolina. Donna Peck and Robin Adair were teammates at Cape and on a Salisbury State team that won a national championship. Robin won 10 state titles as a coach at Tower Hill. And there are lots of stories that transcend multiple generations.

Maiden voyage - Women sometimes change names, in some cases more than once, while others marry multiple times and don’t change names at all. I even know a full brother and sister with different last names, taken from grandfathers who shared raising them. I usually stick with the first name I learn, especially with coaches and athletes. I ran into Stephanie Warrington, former Cape great in hockey and softball, at two consecutive cross country meets, so I assumed she had a kid running, but I didn’t know for Cape, Sussex Academy or Sussex Tech, and I didn’t want to ask, not wanting to show Cape bias – “big sigh” if it wasn’t Cape. And so I’m taking photos of the JV boys’ finish at St. Andrew’s and this Cape runner goes by looking just like his mother Stephanie. It was Jacob Irwin, and then it hit me, two of his great-grandfathers are Mike Mock and Jack Warrington, and that’s as far as I’m branching out for now.

Snippets - The adventures of Sports Editor Emeritus Man – that’s me – translate into: I go where I want when I want, and try not to beat on myself about where I didn’t show up. I missed Friday night football games versus Suitland in Landover, Md., and another at Northeast High in Pasadena, Md. Home slice ain’t heading over no Bay Bridge on a Friday night. Chopper me over in a whirlybird and I’ll think about it. I may be built like a washed-up nose tackle, but in my fantasy sports imagination, I’m a cross country star. Go on now, git!
