Progress on the renovated Milton Elementary School is ongoing as workers try to get the school ready for the 2021-22 school year.
“We have luckily been able to continue working during the past few months and have made great progress,” said Brian Bassett, director of capital projects for the Cape Henlopen School District.
The $35 million project broke ground in December and features a full renovation of the school, which was originally built in 1932.
The renovation includes relocation of the main entrance, lobby and parking to the rear of the building, and a two-story addition for kindergarten and fifth-grade students. The original building will be reconfigured with first and second grades on the first floor, and third and fourth grades on the second floor. The original main lobby will be converted to a special education classroom.
The school district plans to preserve the original entrance, as well as the auditorium and stage.
The renovation project was approved by Cape district voters in a March 2016 referendum that supported new schools at H.O. Brittingham and Rehoboth elementary, and renovations to Shields Elementary in Lewes. Until schools were closed down by the COVID-19 pandemic, Milton Elementary students were using the old H.O. Brittingham school until the renovations at Milton Elementary are complete.
